Our History Begins in 1946
Our Company got its start as Miles Homes in 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Back then the Company’s founder, Miles Q. Fiterman, operated a local lumberyard and began selling pre-cut garage kits to do-it yourselfers. While the automobile was already well-established during this era, the older homes that were built before the automobile was readily available did not have a garage. So Miles provided a simple, affordable solution - a complete garage package with pre-cut walls which made it possible for the homeowner to build their own affordable, detached garage.
As the post World War II boom took hold and demand for housing increased, Miles Q. Fiterman took the pre-cut garage concept to the next logical step and started selling the Miles Pre-Cut homes.

As the brochure cover below shows, the first home designs were very simple and basic so that a do-it-yourselfer could assemble the home easily. As time went on, the Company began to offer financing to its customers during the construction period. Miles Q. Fiterman’s visionary and affordable solution made it possible for hard-working families to get into a brand new home…and the rest, as they say, is history.

We have obviously come a long way since 1946 when our Company was founded. The Company was sold by its original owners and the headquarters were moved from Minnesota to our current facility in Cheshire, Connecticut. As any other Company with a history as long as ours, there were certainly periods that were more prosperous than others. And while we could probably dedicate an entire section of our website to our history we think it’s much more important to simply leave you with the following key thoughts:
- Our Company’s time-tested program has been available since 1946
- We have enabled more than 40,000 families to get into a brand new home
- We have tremendous experience in our offering our proven owner-builder program. In fact, we have made many, many improvements to our program since 1946 and we continue to make improvements every day to ensure our customer’s success.
